"This military legend was born in Sidney on February 26, 1896. His father was the minister of a Sidney church. This famous Sidneyite joined the US Army when he was just 16. During Word War I he rose to the rank of Captain, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in combat. He then joined the Marines, and fought and studied with rebels in China the 1930s. During World War II he became a friend of President Franklin Roosevelt and displayed great courage and heroics while leading his men on harrowing missions across the Pacific. He retired from the service in 1946 at the rank of brigadier general, and died a year later at the age of 51. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He gave our country one of its most popular phrases, he received more than 20 of the military's highest honors, and he even had a Hollywood movie made of his wartime exploits. In fact, Randolph Scott played him! Email me, and I'll tell you who this great (but unknown)Sidneyite is!" |
